The Bariatric Diet Guide: Before and After Surgery

A stage-by-stage overview of how eating changes around bariatric surgery — for education only, not a personalized meal plan.

Before surgery

Many programs prescribe a pre-operative diet in the weeks before surgery to reduce liver size and lower surgical risk. Your surgical team gives you the specific plan; the guidance below is general education.

The post-op stages

  • Clear liquids in the first days after surgery.
  • Full liquids and protein shakes as tolerated.
  • Smooth, pureed foods over the following weeks.
  • Soft foods, then a gradual return to solid textures.

Long-term habits

Lifelong priorities typically include adequate protein, hydration between (not during) meals, small portions, and prescribed vitamin and mineral supplementation. Individual needs vary — always follow the plan from your own surgeon and dietitian.
